Even when everything was falling apart, he couldn't bring himself to admit that he might be wrong, that he might have harmed Ferelden instead of saving it. He committed atrocities because he thought he was doing it for the greater good. He wanted to keep Ferelden strong and independent, and in trying to do so, he became what he hated, what he'd fought against. People can argue what really happened at Ostagar, what his motivations were, but I don't think his primary motivation can be debated. He will do anything to keep Ferelden safe, and it ends up leading to his downfall. Maric wouldn't have succeeded without his abilities as a general, both militarily and to inspire and lead people, and his deep loyalty. It is undeniable that he is the reason Ferelden still exists as an independent country. It brought a tear to my eyes, seriously, I can't hate this guy anymore. I held her head in my lap, and I believe she died happy. It was as though she held on long enough to come home to us.
